Native americans were the original people in what is now the United States. There were over 3,000 distinct native american tribes when Europeans first made contact. Today, 576 native american tribes are recognized by the US Federal Government. There are also several hundred unrecognized tribes that still exist today. The population of the United States is approximately 2% native americans.
