In 1972, the Blackfeet Tribal Business Council established a 10-year comprehensive plan that identified the need for a community college that could provide post secondary and higher education services to the residents of the Blackfeet Nation and surrounding communities.
As a result, the tribe chartered Blackfeet Community College (BCC) in October 1974 in partnership with Flathead Community College (FCC). Students received credits from FCC until December 1985, when BCC received accreditation from the Northwest Commission on Colleges and Universities.
In 1994, BCC received Land Grant status. The college reached another milestone when it launched its online course program in 2003.
A two-year institution, Blackfeet Community College currently offers more degree programs than any other time in its history. Associates’ degrees in applied science, arts, and science, and certificate programs are offered in 33 areas of study. BCC has successfully maintained steady enrollment throughout the last five years.
Currently, 97 percent of students are American Indian, 57 percent are female and 52 percent are 24 years old or younger.
The college employs 27 full-time and 14 part-time faculty members.
In 2010, Blackfeet Community College (BCC) was awarded a $13 million grant over a five year period to facilitate and aid individuals on and off the Blackfeet Indian Reservation in gaining self-sufficiency through lucrative educational and internship opportunities.
This unique health grant uses a holistic approach intertwined with culturally appropriate training methods in health care fields that are in high demand. The Issksiniip Project is fully funded by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services through the Health Profession Opportunity Grants. The Issksiniip Project will develop strong community partnerships with key agencies with the goal of creating a skilled allied health workforce and new opportunities for unskilled workers.
The goal of the Issksiniip Project is to give 570 participants the opportunity to earn associate degrees or certification in programs such as allied health, human services, licensed nurse practitioners, certified nursing assistants, emergency medical technicians, community health representatives with an emphasis and specialty in diabetes care, health and physical fitness, and holistic health care. Extended courses are provided at our higher education partner sites to provide the participants with higher education degrees.
Over the course of the Issksiniip Project, eligible participants will receive scholarships that include supportive services for tuition, books and fees, supplies needed for the degree program (i.e., uniforms, specialty lab items), childcare, transportation, housing, tutoring, GED preparation, remedial services, social activities, counseling services in academics, placement, and retention, along with assistance in job placement.
