Famed Navajo artist R.C. Gorman is dead at the age of 74.
He died yesterday in Albuquerque of a blood infection and pneumonia. Gorman had been hospitalized for about seven weeks.
The New York Times once called him “the Picasso of American art.” New Mexico’s Cultural Affairs Secretary says Gorman will be remembered as one of the greatest Native American artists.
R.C. Gorman was praised for the quality of his work and his contributions toward putting Native American artists into the mainstream. His work has long been highly sought out collectible art.
Governor Bill Richardson says New Mexico has lost a great citizen and the world has lost a great artist.
